The Pietermaritzburg and Midlands Chamber of Business (PMCB), the third largest chamber in South Africa serving near-on 800 members, has its origins in the 1850’s. Initially, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry were separate. They subsequently amalgamated to form the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PCCI) and in 2002 the unification of the PCCI, Afrikaanse Sakekamer and the Midlands Black Business Forum led to the formation of the Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business (PCB). In 2019 the Midlands, which area the Chamber also serves, was officially included in the name, to form what is today known as the Pietermaritzburg & Midlands Chamber of Business (PMCB). Economic growth is a function of a conducive operating environment and access to opportunities – the Chamber plays a significant role in advocating for business needs; inspiring confidence and opening up opportunities. Its focus on economic and enterprise development plays a critical role in the local economy. Three of its staff members support trade and are qualified to issue Certificates of Origin.
